Virgin Money: bereavement contact and probate limit

Last reviewed 29 September 2026

Virgin Money publishes its own line: below £50,000 it closes a deceased customer’s accounts against its forms, and from £50,000 it wants to see a grant. Here is how to reach the bereavement team, what each tier requires, and what it can pay before probate.

How to tell Virgin Money about a death

Call the Virgin Money bereavement team on 0800 0121590 (Monday to Friday 8am–6pm, Saturday 8am–3pm). You can also report the death by uploading the death certificate through its online form. Branch staff can start the process in person.

Once notified, Virgin Money freezes accounts held in the deceased’s sole name and tells you which documents it needs. Joint accounts pass to the surviving holder.

How much Virgin Money releases without probate

Virgin Money publishes its threshold: a grant of representation is needed once the deceased’s sole balances with the bank reach £50,000. The figure applies to the total held with Virgin Money, not to the estate as a whole.

Balance heldWhat Virgin Money asks for
Less than £50,000Virgin Money sends a form to complete instead of a grant, plus ID for anyone signing it.
£50,000 or moreAn original or certified grant of probate, letters of administration or Scottish confirmation.

Several indexes still show £35,000 for Virgin Money. The current bereavement page uses £50,000.

What Virgin Money can pay before the grant

Virgin Money can usually pay funeral costs, grant fees and inheritance tax direct to the provider against an invoice, or reimburse whoever has paid. This is worth using if the estate needs cash for the funeral or to clear inheritance tax before probate can be issued.

Clydesdale, Yorkshire Bank and Nationwide

Accounts first opened with Clydesdale Bank (sort codes 82-) or Yorkshire Bank (05-) use a separate bereavement line: 0800 011 3238, Monday to Friday 9am–5pm. Virgin Money is now part of Nationwide, but a death must still be reported to Nationwide separately.
