How much does a lasting power of attorney cost?
Last reviewed 18 August 2026
A lasting power of attorney is among the cheapest safeguards a person can put in place, and among the dearest to do without — for the alternative, once capacity is lost, is the court itself.
The registration fee
Each lasting power of attorney must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, and the fee is £92 per LPA in England and Wales (raised from £82 on 17 November 2025). Most people make both types — Property & Financial Affairs, and Health & Welfare — so £184 in total, or £368 for a couple. Making the LPA itself is free if you use the GOV.UK forms; the fee is only for registration.
Reductions, and the cost of waiting
A donor with a gross income under £12,000 can claim a 50% reduction (£46 per LPA), and those on certain means-tested benefits may be exempt entirely (form LPA120). A solicitor to draft the forms adds roughly £300–£600 per LPA. Weigh all this against the alternative: if capacity is lost with no LPA in place, a Court of Protection deputyship costs far more — around £400 to apply plus ongoing supervision — and takes months.
